In August 1944, Field Marshall Montgomery launched an audacious campaign to trap the German 5th and 7th Panzer Armies in Lower Normandy, forming a ring of steel around them with American, British, Canadian and Polish armour. The increasingly-encircled German forces, however, comprised some of the toughest and most battle-hardened units in Hitler's Army - and what would become known as the 'Falaise Gap' became synonymous with carnage.
