The continuing popularity of the Tudors and Stuarts owes much to the powerful and glittering portraits that survive from their era. From the arrival of Holbein in 1526 to the work of Rubens a century later, the dynasties found artists who fully captured the confident spirit of the times. More than 150 works from public and private collections are gathered together in this book. They range from monumental full-length paintings to exquisite miniatures of the monarchs and their courtiers, as well as sculptures and tapestry and they span just over 100 years -broadly the century between the arrival of the German artist Hans Holbein the Younger, in search of employment at the court of Henry VIII, and that of the Flemish Anthony Van Dyck, invited to England by Charles I. The selection has been made by Karen Hearn, Assistant Keeper in the British Collection at the Tate Gallery, who has written the catalogue entries with a team of other leading experts. The detailed and often revelatory information they contain is the result of much intensive research.
