The 15 contributions delve into the rich polysemy of the Latin word \u003ci\u003eauctor\u003c\/i\u003e, with its legal and political, philosophical and theological, rhetorical and literary implications, and into the evolution that led to « auteur » in French. The first part presents the fundamental meanings of \u003ci\u003eauctor\u003c\/i\u003e (its etymology and connection with the verb \u003ci\u003eaugeo\u003c\/i\u003e, a review of various instances of synonymy). The second section focuses on institutional and historical aspects (the meaning of the formula \u003ci\u003epatres auctores\u003c\/i\u003e concerning the Roman Senate, the political authority and historiographical \u003ci\u003eauctoritas\u003c\/i\u003e by Livius and Tacitus, the figure of Brutus over the centuries as the founder of Roman Republic and defender of liberty). The third deals with philosophical values (\u003ci\u003eauctor\u003c\/i\u003e and \u003ci\u003eauctoritas\u003c\/i\u003e in Cicero, the relationship between \u003ci\u003eauctor\u003c\/i\u003e and \u003ci\u003einterpres\u003c\/i\u003e by Seneca), with literary developments (how, during the 1rst century, the meaning changed from « guarantor » to « author » as a model or initiator of a genre, and then how Ieronymus constructed his auctorial \u003ci\u003epersona\u003c\/i\u003e) and with the idea of the « divine author » in the pagan and later in the Christian thought (\u003ci\u003eauctor universi\u003c\/i\u003e and similar expressions).
