Peck provides a measured answer to the question of the book's significance in understanding the Earl's career, along with a look at its effect upon his reputation then and since. This edition of Leicester's Commonwealth and its critical apparatus should permit a fresh and more informed look not only at the Earl of Leicester himself and the Elizabethan administration but also at the activities of the Catholic courtiers both in England and on the continent.
