On 14 July 1865, man first set foot on the summit of the Matterhorn. A victory due to the daring of British mountaineers and their guides. Because the conquest of this mountain, 80 years after that of Mont Blanc, was an arduous and risky undertaking. Never had such an ascent been achieved at the time. And the Matterhorn had repelled every attempt from both the Swiss and Italian sides. But the tragedy that followed soon after this victory would cast a dark shadow over the feat despite it being a major event in the history of alpinism.
