In daily Facebook posts I drew attention to how women of the past had fought back. The only criterion was that the women looked to militant collective action rather than Parliament or Congress. I also chose women whose lives were unconventional, those who challenged expectations by speaking out and finding their own ways to love as they were fighting for a radical transformation of their world. The posts resonated with readers struggling to deal with the threat. Hundreds of people responded with positive comments and suggestions and many urged me to turn the posts into a book. The first Daughters were drawn from my doctoral research on radical women of the nineteenth century. As lock-down continued, I researched unfamiliar Rebellious Daughters in response to shifting political moments - clapping for carers, Black Lives Matter and strike movements are all reflected in the Rebellious Daughters. Readers turned into contributors and new voices put forward their own choices. Many of the Rebellious Daughters are women you will be surprised you never heard of before. The book introduces women in accessible mini-biographies and excavates their lives from the obscurity to which they have been condemned by a historiography which is misogynistic, racist and centred on men in positions of power.
