It was the first book to attempt to cover the fleets of Southern European ferry operators in a fully descriptive format with the benefit of illustrations. The process of preparing showed us just what an enormous task it was and why others had been deterred. The culture of business secrecy in many of the areas covered and the lack of alternative sources of information meant that much of the book was compiled from personal observation and research. The result is that some of the material differed from that which has appeared in other sources and, although the general standards of accuracy was perhaps better than we had expected, some errors and gaps in the information did emerge. The success of the first edition has however encouraged the authors to undertake the pleasant task of revising, updating and expanding the material to produce this second edition. The nature of the operators covered has been widened.
